Adjuvant Treatment

Definition: Adjuvant treatment is a cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiation, or biological therapy) that is offered after a surgical procedure in order to improve the outcome of patients at high risk of relapse. After surgery, adjuvant treatment is given to target leftover disease that cannot be seen with the eye or in scans. High-dose interferon-alfa2b is the only drug thus far that has been approved by the FDA for adjuvant therapy of patients with stage III melanoma.
